Storyline Description
When human strength reaches its limit, and the people or things we depend on can't carry us any further, where do we look? Psalm 121 reminds us to lift our eyes beyond ourselves and recognize that our ultimate help comes from the Lord—the Maker of heaven and earth.
Look Up
There is nothing wrong with wanting to succeed, grow, accomplish great things, and become the best that we can be.
But there is an important truth we must remember:
We cannot do everything by our own strength.
Eventually, our strength becomes tired. Our knowledge reaches its limit. Our connections cannot solve every problem, and even those who genuinely love us cannot always provide what we need.
So the question becomes:
Where does your help come from?
The psalmist declares:
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”
— Psalm 121:1–2, KJV
The answer is not simply that help will come.
The answer identifies the Helper.
My help comes from the Lord.
When Human Strength Becomes Tired
Psalm 121:3–4 gives us another beautiful assurance:
“He that keepeth thee will not slumber… he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”
Human beings become tired.
Even the strongest person must eventually sleep. The person you depend upon cannot remain awake twenty-four hours a day watching over you.
But God does not sleep.
There is never a moment when God becomes too exhausted to hear you.
There is never a night shift when His protection ends.
There is never an hour when heaven closes because God needs rest.
Your Keeper neither slumbers nor sleeps.
The Lord Is Your Keeper
Sometimes the people we expect to protect us disappoint us.
Someone we trusted may expose what we expected them to protect. Someone we depended upon may be unavailable when we desperately need them.
Psalm 121 redirects our confidence:
“The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.”
— Psalm 121:5, KJV
People have limitations.
God does not.
This does not mean Christians will never experience hardship, disappointment, illness, or suffering. Psalm 121 is not a promise that nothing difficult will ever happen. Rather, it expresses confidence in God's continual keeping presence through whatever we encounter.
Day and Night
“The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.”
— Psalm 121:6, KJV
Day and night represent something beautiful here:
God's care does not have office hours.
Morning or midnight, in seasons of celebration or seasons of uncertainty, the Lord remains our Keeper.
His presence is not seasonal.
He Watches Over Your Life
Psalm 121:7–8 concludes:
“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
Your going out matters to God.
Your coming in matters to God.
Your journey matters.
Your soul matters.
Your life matters.
And that brings us back to the question with which we began.
Where Does Your Help Come From?
Is your ultimate confidence in your position?
Your education?
Your family background?
Your friends?
Your finances?
Your children?
Your connections?
These things can certainly be blessings from God, and people can be instruments through which He helps us. But none of them should become a replacement for the One from whom our ultimate help comes.
People can become tired.
Positions can change.
Money can disappear.
Relationships can disappoint.
Human knowledge has limitations.
But the psalmist declares:
“My help cometh from the LORD.”
So lift your eyes.
Wait upon God when you do not know what comes next, remembering Psalm 27:14:
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart…”
And rejoice in being in His presence, as Psalm 122:1 declares:
“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.”
When you cannot see the answer, look to the Helper.
When your own strength becomes weak, look to the Helper.
When people cannot give you what you need, look to the Helper.
And when someone asks:
“Where does your help come from?”
Let your heart confidently answer:
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
