Beyond Salvation: Growing in Knowledge, Faith, and Spiritual Maturity
Storyline Description
Accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour marks the beginning of a new life in Him. However, spiritual growth does not end with our confession of faith. We are called to study God's Word, renew our minds, strengthen our relationship with Him, and put what we learn into practice. Just as a building requires a strong foundation, our Christian lives require continual growth in biblical understanding, obedience, and faithfulness.
1. Build Yourself Through God's Word
Build! Learn! Study! Grow!
How well do you know the Word of God?
When someone asks you a question about your faith, are you prepared to explain what you believe and why you believe it?
These questions should encourage us to become more intentional about studying Scripture.
The Bible says:
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." — 2 Timothy 2:15, KJVOpens in a new window
God's Word should not be something we encounter only during church services or when difficulties arise.
It should become part of our daily lives.
The more we study Scripture carefully, the better equipped we become to recognize truth, answer questions thoughtfully, and make decisions consistent with our faith.
However, spiritual maturity does not mean having an immediate answer to every question. Sometimes wisdom requires us to acknowledge what we do not know and return to Scripture for understanding.
Do not study merely to answer people. Study to know God, understand His ways, and live according to His truth.
2. Change Your Mindset
Spiritual growth requires a renewed mind.
Sometimes the greatest obstacle to progress is not what is happening around us but how we understand and respond to our circumstances.
Romans 12:2Opens in a new window reminds us:
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…" — KJV
A renewed mind changes how we approach challenges.
Instead of allowing fear to govern our decisions, we learn to exercise faith and sound judgment.
Instead of responding to every disagreement with anger, we learn patience.
Instead of allowing pride to prevent correction, we become teachable.
Instead of following every opinion we hear, we examine it in light of Scripture.
A changed life begins with a renewed mind, and a renewed mind must continually be nourished by God's truth.
3. Stand Firm in Your Spiritual Strength
The Christian journey requires perseverance.
There will be moments when our faith is tested, when answers seem delayed, and when circumstances challenge what we believe.
Yet Scripture encourages us:
"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might." — Ephesians 6:10, KJVOpens in a new window
Notice that our spiritual strength is rooted in the Lord.
We are not called to depend entirely upon our own understanding or ability.
We must learn to pray, study, seek godly counsel, remain faithful, and trust God's guidance.
Standing firm does not mean that we never struggle. It means that when struggles come, we continue to depend upon God.
4. Salvation Is the Beginning of Spiritual Growth
When we confess our faith in Jesus Christ and receive Him as Lord, we begin a new journey.
But what happens after that confession?
Do we continue learning?
Do we develop a consistent prayer life?
Do we allow God's Word to correct our attitudes and actions?
Do we grow in love, patience, humility, and obedience?
Ephesians 2:8–10Opens in a new window teaches that salvation is God's gift of grace through faith, not something earned by our works, and that believers are created in Christ Jesus for good works.
Therefore, we do not grow spiritually to purchase salvation.
We grow because we have received God's grace and desire to live in a way that reflects our relationship with Christ.
Second Peter 3:18Opens in a new window encourages us:
"But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ…" — KJV
Salvation is not a graduation from learning.
It is the beginning of a lifelong journey of discipleship.
5. When Faith and Actions Are in Conflict
Sometimes believers experience an inward struggle.
We know what Scripture teaches, yet we find it difficult to practice.
We believe we should forgive, but resentment remains.
We believe we should trust God, yet fear influences our decisions.
We understand the importance of prayer, yet we neglect it.
These struggles remind us that knowing God's Word and living according to it require continued spiritual growth.
James 1:22Opens in a new window says:
"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." — KJV
Our faith should influence our conduct.
When our actions fall short of what we believe, we should respond with humility, repentance, prayer, and a willingness to change rather than surrendering to discouragement.
The purpose of studying God's Word is not merely to fill our minds with information but to allow God's truth to shape our lives.
6. Learning From God's Dealings With Israel
Throughout the Old Testament, we see God's dealings with Israel.
We read about His promises, commandments, mercy, justice, patience, and faithfulness.
We also encounter examples of obedience, disobedience, repentance, restoration, and the consequences of human decisions.
These accounts provide important lessons for believers today.
First Corinthians 10:11Opens in a new window explains that events recorded concerning Israel serve as examples and instruction.
As members of the body of Christ, we can learn from these biblical accounts while recognizing Israel's particular covenant history and the teachings given to the Church through Jesus Christ and His apostles.
God's dealings with His people remind us of the importance of faithfulness, humility, and obedience.
We should therefore study the whole counsel of Scripture carefully, recognizing how its teachings point us toward God's purposes and the life we are called to live in Christ.
7. Build Upon a Strong Foundation
Jesus described the wise man who built his house upon a rock.
When the rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew, the house remained standing because it had a strong foundation.
See Matthew 7:24–25Opens in a new window.
Jesus connects this picture with hearing His words and putting them into practice.
That is the foundation we should desire.
A life built upon Christ and shaped by His Word.
A faith strengthened through prayer.
A mind renewed by truth.
A character developed through obedience.
A heart willing to receive correction.
Do not be satisfied with simply knowing that the foundation exists. Continue building your life upon it.
My Declaration
I will study the Word of God.
I will seek understanding rather than knowledge alone.
I will allow Scripture to renew my thinking.
I will strengthen my faith through prayer, obedience, and perseverance.
I will not stop growing after my confession of faith.
I will remain teachable.
I will learn from the examples recorded in Scripture.
I will seek to become a doer of God's Word and not a hearer only.
My foundation is Jesus Christ, and I will continue building my life upon His truth.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Give me a sincere desire to study and understand Your Word. Renew my mind, strengthen my faith, and help me recognize the areas of my life that require change. Teach me to live according to Your truth, not merely to speak about it. Grant me wisdom when questions arise, humility when I need correction, and perseverance when my faith is tested. May my life reflect Your grace, love, and faithfulness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Remember
Salvation is not the end of your spiritual journey. It is the beginning of a life of growing in Christ.
Study the Word.
Understand the Word.
Believe the Word.
Live the Word.
Share the Word.
Build your faith upon Jesus Christ, and let His Word shape the person you are becoming.
